Similarities and differences between makeup art and Permanent MakeUp. Practical recommendations.
At the heart of permanent makeup (PMU) is make-up design. It is a very important, integral and fundamental part of the procedure. A technician practicing permanent makeup must have a clear understanding and possess knowledge about proper, classical proportions and facial shapes and must know what harmony, color and nuances are, i.e. they must be a make-up artist.
A makeup artist is a specialist in artistic face decoration (make-up) following the latest trends in the world of fashion. To a certain extent, they have inherited the art of make-up known since ancient times. Besides primitive forms of skin painting and tattooing, facial make-up as an art developed in Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Rome. Today, makeup as an art is undergoing constant changes; this or that color becomes trendy, or this or that style. Properly chosen make-up may enhance one’s looks or create optical illusions.
It can be natural, extravagant or elegant, depending on the desired goal. However, in contrast with decorative make-up, one should not be overzealous with the saturation of colors. It is necessary to be extremely careful in the selection of shades. The face is a like a business card; make-up reflects one’s attitude to fashion and one’s self-image. In modern make-up, each detail of the face should be defined carefully. Make-up is considered well done only when it is ‘’full face’’. Make-up that is applied professionally and that corresponds to the inner ‘’self’’boots self-confidence and delivers a feeling of comfort.
Example 1. Permanent Makeup was applied on the client’s eyelids and lips in the natural direction and in muted shades.
Example 2. After some time, the client requested additional saturation to enhance her appearance. A unanimous decision was made to enhance the color of the lips (contrasts was added) and apply permanent makeup on the eyebrows.
Make-up design in permanent makeup is based on the knowledge of classical application; the result of PMU will directly depend on the ability of specialist to use it correctly. Nevertheless, there are significant differences and many points of divergence between conventional and permanent make-up.
Makeup is an art of making the face more beautiful with the help of decorative make-up. The varieties of make-up design – make-up, art make-up design, all types of make-up.
The result of the pigmenting process is a long-lasting effect. Permanent make-up, tattooing, contour make-up, and tattoo make-up – these are names for the same procedure, having the identical connotation and not changing the essence of the process or the final result.
Pigmenting (micropigmentation, dermapigmentation, dermographics) is a forced mechanical traumatization of the skin for purpose of implanting and grafting pigment. This should not be confused with pigmentation! Pigmentation is the coloring of the skin or body tissue as a result of the deposition of pigment, especially in an excessive amount.
Due to the pigments naturally produced in the body (for example, bile pigments stimulating the characteristic skin tone), pigmentation of the skin, hair and irises can occur depending on the quantity and distribution of the pigment melanin in them.
A permanent makeup specialist must be able to see, understand and explain to the client the difference between decorative and permanent make-up.
Waking up in the morning, enjoying a swim in the pool, relaxing of just staying in, we do not always have the opportunity or motivation to use cosmetics. However, the desire to look good is there all the times, and this can be made possible with the help of PMU procedures. We should keep in mind that PMU will be an essential part and round-the-clock appearance on a par with pigmented patches, acne or reddening of the face in the absence of cosmetics.Permanent Makeup may serve as a base for application of decorative make-up, but it should not require application of make-up in order to achieve the wholeness of the image.
Attempts to reach a decorative effect through PMU cannot always be successful. Decorative make-up may be removed at any moment, unlike PMU, which is implanted once in the upper layers of the skin. PMU stays there for a fairly long period of time, and it is not easily corrected or removed, including in connection with changes in one’s style or lifestyle.
Poorly executed make-up can turn one’s face into a painted over or doll-like mask, which might look different after the application of make-up, but not necessarily better.
Even when there is a wish to achieve a decorative effect, it is important to remember that there are parameters of the skillful application of make-up that must be adhered to.
If PMU is necessary, the appropriate shape, proportion and color palette must be selected. In PMU, the color palette should include natural, not conflicting, shades.
natural make-up must be achieved through cosmetics of muted, quiet tones, and it should be almost unnoticeable to the eye. According to classical canons a well-done make-up is make-up with emphasis on a specific facial feature. As a rule, it is either the eyes, lips or eyebrows. It is believed that if the lips and clearly defined, highlighting the eyes is unnecessary, and vise versa. When the eyes are emphasized, the lips should look relatively neutral.
The goal for permanent makeup is harmony and aesthetics!
People are harmonious by nature; therefore, the sum total of the external features in the appearance of a person always strives for balance. The aesthetic perception of the visible appearance is found within a person. Above all, visual evaluation of appearance comes at first glance.
Aesthetics is the realm of an emotional, sensory relationship with the world. Harmony is an aesthetic category meaning wholeness, orderliness, unity, coordination and natural coherence in all parts and elements of shape. Harmonia (Greek) is conformity, agreement, unanimity, connection, and proportionality. Harmoge (Greek) is junction, combination, or binding, i.e. the removal of differences that are too sharp, contrasting in tones; evenness, softness of tonal transitions – nuances.
When disharmony is introduced into the general appearance by a specialist’s hands, or, conversely, when a full-fledged, completed style is created, it is difficult not to notice it.
In Figures 1 and 3 ,harmony of the image, wholeness of composition, and correspondence of the make-up to the color type, style and appearance as a whole are shown. In Figures 2 and 4, the make-up exists separately from the person.

From what point must the make-up artist start with the correct approach to the PMU procedure?
There is an accepted sequence of steps for scanning a person by convention:
-Purpose of make-up;
-Shape of the face;
-Shape of facial features;
-Type and color of the skin;
Age is the period of stage of development of every person. Preferences of taste can change throughout life. For example, with career development of with a change in the sphere if work one’s social environment may change as well. In addition, only with experience and some experimenting comes the understanding of one’s individual taste and style. If youth is the brilliance of color and light, then people of mature age need not use bright or unnatural shades and should not emphasize contrasts.
